BMST 2015 Cancelled

08/17/2015 by admin

BMST 2014 Sunset

Event Update: CANCELLED

Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials 2015
AMA Land Speed Grand Championship

Presented by N-Grained Inc.

Over the past year, we have all been working towards the goal of racing motorcycles at the Bonneville Salt Flats. As the event management, it is always our intent to run the premier motorcycle land speed racing event, the AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, at Bonneville. However, we are always beholden to mother nature to provide us with good conditions in the environment that we all dedicate our time and resources to.

Last year we were able to hold an event when conditions were stacked against us. This year, the conditions have been improving but not at the pace needed. We have assessed the conditions and we are unable to sustain the minimum standards for a premier event. Due to this, we are cancelling the 2015 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, Presented by N-Grained inc.

It’s been an extremely difficult decision to make, and one we have not taken lightly. Our dedicated team has put in countless hours to evaluate the options for course layouts, the quality of the course, pit locations, salt flats on/off accessibility, course volume sustainability, and the impact on salt flats resources.  Although we are cancelling, other events are still scheduled for this season. Our decision does not affect the ability for other events to proceed.

Current Course Conditions: What Changed?

Leading into this weekend, all systems were go…

  • Water from earlier rainstorms in most affected areas was being absorbed/evaporated at the normal rate.
  • Weather was warming and we had a good forecast.
  • Course prep was starting on the International “Long Course.”

Then things changed…

  • 1/2 inch or more of water currently sits over  the “Mountain Course” and Pit area.
    • We evaluated moving the course, such as last year, and could not find better conditions to support two courses or a viable alternate pit location.
    • Due to the volume of water that continues to persist, the normal rates of absorption/evaporation are questionable.
  • The International course is not ideal over the entire length and overall course quality is a concern.
    • The current course would deteriorate rapidly for use by 300 bikes over the 5 days of racing.
  • Damage to the salt from last season has not healed, including the access routes to the pit area.

What happens next?

We appreciate your patience while we sort through the details of the cancellation. We will be in touch with participants in the coming weeks with further information to answer any question that you have, and to provide further details on our cancellation procedure.

Can we Save the Salt?

There has been a lot of discussions and comments recently about the deterioration of the Bonneville Salt Flats due to human interaction, mining and the stewardship of the public land. Like many public areas, it is beloved by people for recreation, livelihood, and intrinsic beauty. As racers, we are carrying on a tradition of pushing the boundaries of human ingenuity that goes back over 100 years.

There are many factors that contribute to the conditions that we are facing this year. Regardless of the causes, we are seeing that the salt this year is not the same as years past. The traditional race courses for all of the organizations are becoming increasingly difficult to develop. In the coming weeks we will be sharing further information of how we plan to contribute to a positive future for all who use this wonderful resource, and what you can do to help.

We appreciate, and understand, all of the hours that you have dedicated to preparing your motorcycles. The sacrifices you will have made to reach for your goals throughout this year, and for our international participants, the additional logistics that you encounter to reach us.

We are working along side you as we extend ourselves to help you achieve those goals.

We thank the volunteers for their contributions, the AMA and FIM organizations and support staff. We also wish to thank our sponsors for their support of our sport.

<p”>Sincerely,

Delvene Manning

Salt Course Conditions Update

Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials 2015
AMA Land Speed Grand Championship

Presented by NGrained Inc.

We are still running.
The season continues and motorcycles will be heading to the salt to break AMA national and FIM world records August 29-September 3rd.

Last year and again this year, we are facing a particularly challenging environment for beginning course development. All of the community and fellow LSR race organizations want to see us run and we are all sharing information and resources to enable that to happen.

First Assessment

Based on conditions, we are cautiously optimistic. At this time we are still planning on racing because we have identified potential course locations that will support breaking records.  As many saw last year, our team was able to take our decades of combined experience to find and island of salt to race on.  We adapt to the conditions to provide the best experience for participants and we will do this again.

Salt Conditions

Conditions are assessed every year to find the optimal locations for courses. This weekend was the first onsite assessment by members of our course management team. Our course management team consists of experienced racers and track officials with decades of experience on the salt. Based on their assessment which included discussions with other race organizations and with resources in the area, we are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to build courses and hold the event as planned.

Where is the Salt?

There is still salt at the Bonneville Salt Flats. In this dynamic environment, the salt has moved. There is more salt in the western area than in the eastern section of the typical courses. What our team has found is that a considerable amount of the salt appears to have migrated.  The conditions they described are similar to when a sand bar moves. This just means that, based on the salt location, we are adjusting course configurations.

What about rain?

We are 3 weeks out and no more appreciable rain fall will result in the conditions we need to race.

Didn’t it rain last week?

Conditions were great up until Friday Aug 7th and a course was being developed for another organization. However, on Friday, the area received about an inch of rain. The resulting build up of water on the salt flats is expected to be absorbed/evaporated within 11 days. This is still within our timeline for dragging and developing the course.

As we get closer and as we get updates, we will be sharing information on bonnevillespeedtrials.com and our social media. We will be in contact and sharing updates as conditions improve.

We are all looking forward to a great event.

See you on the Salt!

Salt Course Conditions Update

Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials 2015
AMA Land Speed Grand Championship

We are still running.
The season continues and motorcycles will be heading to the salt to break AMA national and FIM world records August 29-September 3rd.

Boots on the Ground

Our Race Director and a contingent of BMST volunteers will be onsite the weekend of August 8th and 9th to evaluate course locations. As we look forward to another exciting year of the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, we are encouraged by recent reports but we need to be on location with “Top People” to determine exactly what is available for the best motorcycle land speed racing courses.

Is the salt improving?

Yes! And.. not all of the areas we race were impacted. A report from a recent fly-over by a friend of BMST indicated that the area affected is looking more “salt-flats” and less “mud-flats.” That info, and the recent reports from the salt, indicate that conditions are improving and that we have a few potential course locations.

What do you mean by course locations?

Every racing group has a slightly different race setup and course location. We have unique needs that are different from SCTA and USFRA. Every year, we evaluate salt conditions with an excellent team of volunteers that, collectively, have decades of experience on the salt. Thanks to this experience Rex, Mel, Bob and Brad were able to develop the two courses on an island in the lake last year. This year, there is less water but other obstacles to deal with. We will be looking at the available salt and determining the optimal course setup the weekend of August 9-10.

Keep wrenching and getting ready to go. We are getting ready, and we are looking forward to starting the AMA Land Speed Grand Championship with you.

See you on the salt!Sincerely,

Delvene Manning
Owner/Event Manager

Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials: New Name! New Owner!

06/03/2014 by admin

Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, The AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, is the premier motorcycle land speed racing event. Although this is the first year for this event, it is building from a tradition of excellence set by Denis Manning and the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials.

After nearly 40 years of operating a performance motorcycle exhaust company and 10 years of operating the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials, Denis Manning has decided to move on to new pursuits. Some would call this retirement but Denis will likely be calling it more time for working on bikes. We salute Denis for giving us all a chance to pursue our dreams of world and national records and are happy to announce a new event and an owner familiar to many participants.

Delvene Manning, Owner, Deliciate Promotions LLC, and Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, is carrying on the tradition of running the premier motorcycle land speed racing event. She has been the behind the scenes manager of BUB events since their inception over 10 years ago. As an event manager, and a fellow salt fever addict, Delvene is looking forward to delivering another action packed week of record breaking motorcycle performance August 23-28 2014 at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials.
